  5. Benjamin Franklin was exiting after writing the U.S. constitution, a woman asked him "Well, Doctor, what have we got—a republic or a monarchy?". He replied "A republic—if you can keep it. (http://press-pubs.uchicago.edu/founders/documents/v1ch18I.html)

Our democratic republic seems to have slipped-- degenerated-- into more democracy than republic. The public votes of our recent presidential election demonstrate how diverse, or divided, is our 'demos', i.e., people. How can we maintain this republic when we,the people, think only of themselves and not of others?

The vision of a free nation has been lost. We no longer understand from what tyranny we are freed. We now consider freedom little more than our 'guarantee' of individual rights to pursue comfort and pleasure, which is not translated as the Government's mandate to provide individual comforts and pleasures, read, 'entitlements'.

Shining, our nation no longer can focus on a guiding light, or a common vision. That original vision of our founding fathers faded, and now some would attempt to replace it with party platform. Neither the Republican, nor the Democratic party platform is grand enough to unite our people. These platforms only encourage selfishness on both sides. They breed politicians, but leave no room for statesmen. I believe we are replaying history, like that which led to the decline and fall of the Roman Republic. The forces from without could only push down those wall, or ours, because of the decay within!
